About the exhibition

A complex instrument of communication, language is one of the cornerstones of civilization. Only through the notions embodied in words can the world be made comprehensible. Words and writing always imply pronounciation and sound. And this exhibition represents an important aspect of ‘Sound’, the topic of the year.

The title of the exhibition refers to Luther’s words: „God is everywhere but does not want you to look for him everywhere; look only there where the word is, and you will grasp him.“ At the time of the Reformation, words were the basis of reflexion and revolution and, today they still bear the power to create and bring about change.

In the recollection of text and concept, a connection is established between the renewal of faith at the time of the Reformation, and the creation of the abstract and conceptional art of modernism. The exhibition showcases artworks in various media, with the ‘word’ appearing in a wide variety of forms, such as sign, symbol, anagram or braille.
