Fragile!

Artists from the field of the fine arts explore the possibilities and limitations of their medium and use a fragile material to extend it through innovative approaches and concepts. Guest curators of the exhibition: Erika Wäcker-Babnik and Stefan Graupner, from Munich, in cooperation with the director of the Künstlerhaus, Eike Berg.

Increasingly, artists who do not normally work in the applied arts have been (re)discovering the medium of glass for their work.  Due to its many colours, facets and design options, glass is a versatile material that can be processed in a variety of ways and combined with other materials and artistic media in an interdisciplinary manner.

Some materials incorporate very complex effects, which can trigger strong emotions. Through its transparency, glass transmits a feeling of cleanliness and honesty; its optical properties convey the impression of objectivity through their use in scientific instruments such as microscopes or lenses. At the same time, its brittleness can cause feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, whilst its shine, the refraction of light and its reflective properties also arouse a mystical, spiritual impression.
