About the exhibition New Beginnings

The exhibition New Beginnings is co-organized by the City Museum of Freising and the Schafhof – European Center for Art Upper Bavaria to mark the anniversary 200 Years of the Schafhof | 15 Years of the European Center for Art.

At the behest of King Max I. Joseph, the Schafhof was completed in 1820 as a pilot farm for his valuable herd of merino sheep. Since 2005, the building has been open to the public as an artist’s venue of the District of Upper Bavaria. In the gallery on the ground-floor level, both new beginnings are to be linked together and experienced through artistic means. The City Museum of Freising presents large-scale reproductions of historical depictions of the Schafhof alongside the corresponding original views shown in display cases. The Center for Art presents interventions both inside the exhibition space and outside the Schafhof, where contemporary artists enter into dialogue with the Schafhof’s history and function.

City Museum of Freising

The Asam building is currently being renovated – the City Museum has hit the road. This summer the museum is a guest at the European Center for Art Upper Bavaria at the Schafhof, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. Situated within an idyllic landscape, the building and its distinctive roofline has always drawn the eye of painters and draftsmen alike. The City Museum of Freising presents large-scale reproductions of historical depictions of the Schafhof, combined with the corresponding original views shown in display cases. Floor-toceiling graphical elements, paintings and photos create an intensive atmosphere within an architecture of walls and objects configured inside the space.

Schafhof – European Center for Art Upper Bavaria

The Center for Art augments the exhibition with interventions of contemporary art. In the exhibition space, around the building and outside the Schafhof, contemporary artists enter into a dialogue with its history and function. Several of the works of art are drawn from the Center for Art’s collection, while others have been created especially for the anniversary. They are representative of the Schafhof’s role as a European artists’ venue and center for contemporary art of the District of Upper Bavaria.
