Exhibitions

Throughout the year, exhibitions at the Schafhof present international and local positions in contemporary art. The spectrum includes all forms of visual arts, such as painting, video art, sculpture, photography, drawing, conceptual art, and installation. Group exhibitions with international and German artists, solo exhibitions with renowned artists and presentations of works by younger or regionally based artists take place in alternation. Applications are welcome.

Annual themes serve as common threads throughout the exhibition program, and facilitate an engagement with the exhibited works through a range of perspectives. A thematic emphasis also fosters a better understanding of art and a more enjoyable viewing experience. Certain themes emphasize formal aspects (for example, Color in 2013, Structure in 2015, and Sound in 2017), while others focus on specific concepts (for example Illusion in 2014, Identity in 2016, and Art and Science in 2019).

The Schafhof features a gallery on the ground floor and a large exhibition hall on the first floor, with a total exhibition space encompassing almost 450 square meters. The barrel vault ceiling and its unusual shape offer an atmosphere unique to the region and beyond.

About the exhibition Double Take

Eszter Szabó's works deal with ordinary details of everyday situations that are so familiar that they almost become invisible. She researches manifestations of social processes and the origins of public opinion. Vulnerability, inertia, weariness, as well as unattainable desires to be perfect is a general theme that returns in her animated paintings.

Works on display:

In 2053

In 2053 is part of a series dealing with old age and near future. It is a phantasmagoria about today’s young generation in their late 70’s around the 2050’s. Deriving from the observation that people’s personalities and ideologies tend to stay the same as when they were young the video attempts to imagine the elderly version of today’s teens. The series contains several small sized aquarelles and 5 detailed portraits of imaginary characters painted in oil. Based on these portraits was created a 5 channel video animation, that is an interview with these characters.

Dispenser of Delights

Dispenser of Delights is a group of works - paintings, a video installation and a lenticular image. It is a research on credulity, indifference, apathy and infantility and on the reasons and mechanisms of the "willing to believe". The background of the images are photos of real estate advertisements that were downloaded from the internet. The protagonists are invented characters that are painted and animated. We see them while they exercise self-healing, rebirth, purification, being beautiful or simply just 'good'. These absurd pastimes are charged with a strange mixture of religion, shamanism and international esotery.

The Reconquest of Paradise

The Reconquest of Paradise is a 3 minute long animated loop that depicts an 'idealistic' future of Hungary. It is an exaggerated idyll with a indoctrinatied common taste that many Hungarians share these days. The video contains hints of actuality; displaying nationalistic and folkloric symbols where Christianity is mixed with the world of "ősmagyar"-pagan-shaman-astrological beliefs, full of mysticism and prophecy. The animation is based on a large oil canvas painted in 2011.
