About Fondazione Pastificio Cerere

Ex Pastificio Cerere – History

The Cerere building – the oldest of the three major factory buildings in the San Lorenzo district (the others are the Sciarra glassworks and the Wùhrer beer brewery) is undoubtedly the most important feature of the area’s repertory of industrial archaeology. Founded in 1905, in the following year the company commissioned engineer Pietro Satti to create its premises by modifying and adapting two pre-existent structures. In 1960, the pasta factory went out of business, and the complex was left empty until the artist of the “San Lorenzo Group” started to arrive. In 1984 the art critic Achille Bonito Oliva made this place famous through the exhibition “Ateliers”, in which he opened the spaces where the artists Nunzio, Bruno Ceccobelli, Gianni Dessì, Giuseppe Gallo, Piero Pizzi Cannella and Marco Tirelli worked.

The Cerere is an important example of a conversion of an industrial building into a small kunsthalle, so common in European capitals as rare in Italy. Over the years many artists have settled in the former pasta factory whose assistants, through training had in these areas, have become, in turn, established artists. Furthermore, critics, intellectuals and representatives of the entertainment world have gravitated around this cultural hotbed, become a reference point not only for contemporary art, but for culture in general. This takes place within the walls of one location, placed in a zone formerly peripheral, today unanimously recognized as the place of the highest concentration of members of the visual arts of the capital. The spaces of the former Cerere pasta factory, even today, are home to artists' studios, communication and advertising studios, fashion studios and the
Institute of Photography and Integrated Communication.

The Pastificio Cerere Foundation

The Pastificio Cerere Foundation was established in Rome in 2004 by wish of its president, Flavio Misciattelli, with the objective of promoting and disseminating contemporary art through the development of relationships and collaborations with private and public bodies, and national and foreign cultural institutions. The Foundation organizes and promotes educational projects and residences for young artists and curators, as well as a rich program of shows, conferences, workshops and studio visits. Education is the trait d’union of the Foundation’s activity, which aims to carry out projects that involve a large and heterogeneous audience. This is enabled both by diversified programming and by the presence of the archive, which collects documentation and research testifying to the cultural patrimony that has animated the life of the former Pastificio for over thirty years. The artistic director of Pastificio Cerere Foundation is Marcello Smarrelli.

Thomas Berra (Desio, Italy, 1986) has been experimenting with multiple media during the course of his artistic research: from installation to painting, through various expressive modes. Over the last two years he focuses on painting, experimenting with a refined and wild language that draws from the world of graffiti, to the lyricism of Henri Rousseau's two-dimensional detailing painting.

In my work as an artist I focus on isolating the daily processes of communication and movement from their immediate surroundings and subsequently restaging them in video installations. I investigate body language in the context of permanent interaction through the development of systems of notation and choreography. I am interested in how human beings are situated in a digitalized world at the same time being faced with the limitations of the body, the knowledge of said body as well as the impossibility of positioning oneself. The spatial installation of the works is essential for the reflection in a common space.

Transfer Rom - Gasmaro: Baggages

The work of Corinna Gosmaro focuses on reflections about the human being as a global entity and his/her timeless characteristics. The practice is based on the expression of a cognitive and psychophysical process activated through the interactions with the environment. Going back and forth on the border between painting and sculpture, the work draws this journey throughout the history of our culture. The possibility of engaging different patterns elucidating the distinction between the work and its display represents another step further in the artist’s work.

Analía Martínez devotes herself to representational motifs collated from a huge range of environments. In her paintings, the viewer's glance is immediately drawn towards the interior. Changes in colour defamiliarise the spaces in her pictures and thus challenge any supposed intimacy or usual interpretation of the situation portrayed.
Her printmaking work is an artistic investigation into the connections between painting and the reproducibility of prints. Consequently, the resulting works do not fit into any original, historical or social context and shake off the bonds of pre-existing knowledge.

2010-15 Studies in Paiting with professor Anke Doberauer, Academy of Fine Arts in Munich
